Self-Assessment

This is the finale of my portfolio, which vividly displays my progress as a writer starting from my introductory letter, up until my research paper. My growth as a writer is shown through my revisions on my papers, where I have utilized certain strategies in the proper way. I started off my introductory letter by describing my interest in the medical field, moving on to my scientist profile paper, which explains a methodological strategy used for critical thinking called, “CREATE” by Neurologist Professor Sally G. Hoskins, then moving into the literature review paper which describes the metallic hydrogen superconductor, and ending my research paper on the relevance of the right sunscreen product usage.  Though I have learned many skills in my writing for the sciences class, I believe there were a few strategies which I have not shown in my writing, such as reading the sources effectively and showing that I have included the materials I’ve learnt from the sources. I have re-written my introductory letter in order to fix the stumpy little paragraphs, along with paragraph level organization to make the paragraphs flow better. I have also learned to replace a few words with other words to make the sentence flow better. Similarly, I have acquired knowledge on how it’s relevant to include demographic information to frame a reference for the audience. I was well-informed on the significance of carefully fixing grammatical errors.  In order to succeed in writing a paper well, it’s significant to create outlines and drafts in order to organize the paragraph structure on a well-chosen topic. A well-written paper is defined through its conciseness and clarity.

Though some parts of my writing have flaws, I have still grown into a better writer than when I first started off. I have learned that a thesis statement does not necessarily need to be in the introduction, as long as the topics flow. The strategies that I have adapted to will allow me to write my future papers in a more sophisticated way, allowing the audience to understand my purpose behind my paper more efficiently. My writing is not ideal, but I will continue learning and utilizing different strategies in my future writing. I have learned to use in-text citations more frequently, and cite the materials properly in APA style. I have enhanced my knowledge in understanding or reading papers with jargon, which portrays that I can infer writing which may not be easily understood. These concepts will encourage my writing as a whole in my present and future.
